Surah Al-Qasas Verse 24

There is a prayer in the Quran that is referred to by scholars as the prayer of Prophet Moses. This prayer has many virtues, one of which is related to sustenance.

The prayer of Prophet Moses is mentioned in the Quran in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 24.

Al-Qasas itself means stories. It contains various stories, including the story of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him).

This Surah is a Makki Surah, revealed during the prophetic period of Prophet Muhammad in Makkah, and it consists of 88 verses, being the 28th Surah in the Quran after Surah An-Naml.

Reciting the prayer of Prophet Moses is encouraged to make our difficult tasks easier. Furthermore, this prayer is intended as an effort to seek ease in all our endeavors from Him.

The prayer of Prophet Moses is derived from the mentioned portion of Surah Al-Qasas, which translates as:

فَسَقَىٰ لَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَوَلَّىٰٓ إِلَى ٱلظِّلِّ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى لِمَآ أَنزَلْتَ إِلَىَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍۢ فَقِيرٌۭ

FASAQAA LAHUMAA SUMMA TAWALLAAA ILAZ ZILLI FAQAALA RABBI INNEE LIMAAA ANZALTA ILAIYA MIN KHAIRIN FAQEER

So he watered ˹their herd˺ for them, then withdrew to the shade and prayed, “My Lord! I am truly in ˹desperate˺ need of whatever provision You may have in store for me.” (Quran, Al-Qasas 28:24)

The current context in the interpretation of scholars varies. Some interpret it in relation to sustenance (or food).

There are also scholars who interpret it in relation to the work of Prophet Moses, who was shepherding or helping the livestock with a drink and then praying. (Tafsir Al-Wajiz, Prof Wahbah Zuhailli).

Therefore, reciting the prayer of Prophet Moses is related to two aspects, work and sustenance that are made easy by Allah SWT.

Translation: “My Lord, indeed I am in need of whatever good You would send down to me.”
