Prayers for our family (Al-Furqan Verse 74)

ALHAMDULILLAH, once again I express my gratitude to the Almighty for the countless blessings and favors bestowed upon us. One of the teachings of Islam is to always pray, especially for our families and descendants.

Indeed, Allah SWT has said:

Surah Al-Furqan verse 74 In Arabic Text:

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَٰجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّـٰتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍۢ وَٱجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

WALLAZEENA YAQOOLOONA RABBANAA HAB LANAA MIN AZWAAJINAA WA ZURRIYAATINAA QURRATA A’YUNINW WAJ ‘ALNAA LILMUTTAQEENA IMAAMAA

˹They are˺ those who pray, “Our Lord! Bless us with ˹pious˺ spouses and offspring who will be the joy of our hearts, and make us models for the righteous.”

What does this attribute mean? They pray to Allah SWT, turning to His noble face, beseeching Him to bless them with wives and descendants who bring joy and happiness to their hearts, who provide solace and delight. They also pray to be made leaders for those who seek righteousness.

This prayer depicts the hopes of human beings. If the desire is worldly, then the prayer and request are limited to this world alone. However, if the aspiration is for the hereafter, then the longing is directed towards the afterlife.

“When a Muslim passes away, all their deeds come to an end except for three things: a righteous child who continuously prays for them, beneficial knowledge that is passed on after their death, and ongoing charity.”

In achieving a happy and harmonious family, it is important to fulfill the commandments of Allah, such as performing prayers and other acts of worship, maintaining mutual understanding, promoting good deeds, and preventing evil with wisdom, while also assisting and supporting one another. This will undoubtedly bring numerous benefits and strengthen the institution of the family.

They ask Allah SWT for two things. Firstly, they beseech Allah SWT to grant them a spouse and descendants who worship Him alone, bringing happiness in this world and the hereafter. Secondly, they pray for Allah SWT to make them guides, callers to goodness, and promoters of righteous deeds while preventing sinful actions. May Allah bless us with righteous offspring who serve as a soothing balm for our hearts, not only in this world but also in the hereafter.
