It means:

“Those to whom hypocrites said, ‘Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.’ But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, ‘Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.'”

The interpretation of this verse is that there was a group of polytheists from the Quraysh who had prepared a large army to attack the Muslim community (some sources mention that these polytheists were under the command of Abu Sufyan).

So the Muslims were warned to be cautious. However, this warning increased the Muslims’ faith in Allah. They believed in the truthfulness of Allah’s promise of victory. They resolved to advance and then uttered “Hasbunallah” (Allah is sufficient for us).
